TDWĀ MAVENS
Meet Malina
My Story
Iāve always loved dancing from a little girl and remember taking ballet lessons when I was in elementary school. I was also a part of a dance group led by a teacher in my elementary school and we put on shows and recitals with costumes and makeup that made it all the more exciting for me as a young girl. Some of my youngest memories are dancing to Tina turner and Whitney Houston videos or spending time with cousins trying to learn the latest dance craze.
As a young adult I was a liturgical dancer at my church for about 10 years and co-led and choreographed many of the dances. We would incorporate modern and contemporary dance styles into the choreography, which I think enhanced the praise aspect of the performance. We would travel with the pastor and choir when ministering at other places of worship. I also taught dance to youth aged 3 and up at the church, which I enjoyed immensely watching these little ones light up with pride when they learned something new or presented a new dance they had learned.
Though I have no formal training, throughout my life I have always sought out and taken dance classes when there was an opportunity, including ballet, contemporary, modern, hip hop and Latin dance.
I have to say some of my best dancing probably happens at home when Iām free and expressing whatever Iām feeling or experiencing at that moment through dance. If Iām feeling down or overwhelmed, a good song and movement always changes the perspective.Ā
What TDW Means to Me
As a new mom, and an older first time mom, TDW gave me the opportunity to ease back into my love of dance, which I had been wanting to do since having my daughter. It provides me an easy and encouraging atmosphere to improve skills and learn new ones while having fun learning cool choreography and building new friendships. The workout is also great for getting into shape and I feel stronger and healthier as a result of taking the classes. If you love dance, no need to hesitate with this class! Jules and Sara are so patient and encouraging, that any pressure you may feel to be perfect just fades away. Being selected to be a Maven is an honor and I look forward to building community with my fellow Mavens.
