TDW MAVENS

Meet Serena

My Story

Since I can remember I have always loved music and dancing. I remember watching movies and music videos and always trying to memorize choreography so I could teach the whole routine to my friends. I started dancing when I was 3.5 years old and continued dancing competitively until I was 18. I grew up with a single parent who was an extremely hard worker and the symbol of sacrifice and generosity. I loved dance so much but knew my family could not afford it. So throughout my dance career, I would clean the dance studio, be a dance assistant for multiple classes, anything it took for me to continue dancing. Reflecting on my years of dancing, there were many tears of joy and pain but I am most grateful for not only the dance lessons I had learned but the lessons I have been able to carry in life today. I learned the benefits of discipline, the beauty in mastering an art, the commitment to believe in yourself, and most importantly kindness is contagious and so easy to give. Dance has shown me how to express myself and use my gift to bless others. Today I’m reminded that I still use this today in my career and for that I’m humbled and grateful for the gift of dance.

What TDW Means to Me

My whole life I wanted to become a professional dancer, it seemed logical as this is a craft I had invested my whole childhood and teen years to commit to. Unfortunately, when I was 18 I had an injury that officially took me out of any possibility of dancing professionally. My dreams of dancing were shattered and I was left lost and confused on my next steps in life. I decided to continue to teach for a few years, but I desperately missed being a student. The opportunity to be uncomfortable and to have someone guide you to grow and improve was something I wanted to experience again. Thankfully, TDW came into my life and I was thrilled to be a student again and of course get my workout in! I was excited to challenge my brain to remember choreography, having muscle memory come back so quickly, and most importantly move with music! I am also grateful for Jules, who is always encouraging and supporting her dancers. Her passion and love for dance overflows on and off the dance floor. I am grateful for the community and opportunity to meet with other dancers. Although we all have different backgrounds and careers we all share the love of dance! I am humbled to be a part of the MAVENS, my hope is to encourage dancers around the world to return to their love of dance no matter where they are in their lives. We will always be dancers and we will always have dance in our hearts.
