My Story
I started dancing at the age of five, taking classes in ballet, jazz, and tap. I quickly fell in love with ballet and jazz and continued to dance in both genres through high school. My dad was an officer in the Air Force and we moved every three years. It was always a challenge to adjust to new cities, schools, and friends, but dance was always a constant. It was always a place where I felt myself.
After I graduated from high school, life got very busy with college classes and eventually working full-time, leaving no time for dance classes. I also had a hard time finding adult classes that weren’t for beginners. I ended up not dancing for ten years and I missed it terribly. After a particularly tough 2014 I knew that I needed dance back in my life. I searched for adult dance classes and quickly came across The Dancer’s Workout®.
I was so nervous walking into my first class. I hadn’t danced in so long and wasn’t sure I would remember anything, but Jules was incredibly kind and reassuring and as soon as we began dancing I knew I had found what I had been looking for. I was holding back tears that entire first class. I had finally reconnected with that piece of me that had been missing for so long.
I started out planning to attend one class a week, but quickly started attending as frequently as I could. I have been dancing with The Dancer’s Workout® for nearly a decade now, and in 2017 I became a TDW Certified Instructor, now teaching twice a week.
What TDW Means to Me
TDW has allowed me to reconnect with my love of dance in a way I never thought possible as an adult. Now I dance multiple times a week in a safe and supportive environment, and I get the added benefit of getting in a great workout every class. Dancing on a regular basis has made a major impact not only on my physical health, but my mental health as well.
In addition to the health benefits, the community of friends that I have developed from being part of The Dancer’s Workout® is priceless. I love being able to come together and dance with this group of like-minded women with a common appreciation for the gift of dance. We are all different ages, fitness levels, and come from different backgrounds, yet we are connected by this shared love of dance. TDW made that possible.
