Let's face it. Adult women are busy.
Between jobs, children, husbands, parents, and household responsibilities, they don't have much time.
They therefore expect the one meager hour they devote to themselves to be well worth their time.
Yes, they love ballet, but they don't have 90 minutes to spare. They have one hour max - in and out, with perhaps 10 bonus minutes at the beginning or ending of class to quickly socialize with some likable women.
This means their one-hour dance class with you is likely the only exercise they can allow themselves; and while their spirits certainly appreciate the passionate aspects of the class, their "governor" will expect a kick-ass workout that makes them sweat.
Dance cardio is key to the adult dancer's willingness to come back to class tomorrow, the next day, the next week, etc. It allows them to get a good, really excellent total body sweat on WHILE experiencing the utter and complete joy of dancing full out (waltzes, balancés, turns, etc.).
Interested in seeing how we start the cardio section of one of our masterclasses? If so, click Video 3 of our TDW Treasure Chest. As you watch, imagine that you have already done four previous songs which have carefully warmed us up and prepared us for the meat of the class.
This first cardio song is the first in a 6-song arc that our powerful dancers will do before the cool-down. Our goal is for them to learn the choreography for this whole section as they go, while they are dancing, without stopping (except for a water break). So you'll notice how in each successive song we build upon the choreography they have learned in the previous songs.
So here we go. Let's begin our 6-song dance cardio arc. Happy to have you peek inside Video 3 of our TDW Treasure Chest to see how we do it.
See you in class!

Jules Szabo, founder of The Dancer’s Workout® (TDW) is a classically trained ballerina from the UNC School of the Arts and former corporate executive who helps busy working women, mothers, and empty nesters rediscover their love of dance. She specializes in the paraprofessional dancer (adult ballet, jazz, and contemporary dancers who are not beginners and not professionals, who simply love dance over other forms of exercise). Featured among Dance Magazine's recommended online dance programs, The Dancer's Workout® classes were designed to provide former dancers an emotionally and physically safe path back to dance and to help current adult dancers and dance instructors achieve their daily fitness goals through dance. If you are a current or former dancer, you are invited to come dance with us.
